When You First Began

To all my fellow bassists, I have a Question. Based on what you know now about the greatest instrument know  to man...lol what does ever beginner on the axe need to know. There are a few people who asked me to show them some things but im not sure where to begin. Thanks for your help be blessed.

You can start them off on some basic patterns, like:

a) octaves (L-shape : I-V-I(octave) ).
   And incorporate that in a song or a simple tune, like a salsa groove.
b) major/minor pattern.
   Just groove on that. It's fun and simple. You can do a simple 4/4 beat.
   e.g.: I - III-III - IV - V.

All bass player LOVE to groove !! So incorporate basic patterns and lil tricks into a simple groove, and they'll appreciate you for it !! Smiley

Practice these

1. Major Scale
2. Dorian
3. Phrygian
4. Lydian
5. Mixolydian
6. Aeolian
7. Locrian
8. Major Pentatonic
9. Minor Pentatonic
10. Blues
11. Dim
12. Aug
13. Any L & R hand excercises.
14. Practice intervals - 3rds, 5ths, 4ths etc.
15. Learn to play each scale at least over two octaves.
16. Buy Urban Techniques with Ivan and Jamal.

Pray, Practice, Play.

How bout, learn a song!  Everyone likes to hear a song right?  Whether it be just the bass part, maybe the melody or a solo version incorporating melody bass and chords.

Just listen to one thing you really really like and figure that one thing out, that works with everything.  That concept can be used with even huge things, which are in reality built up of very small parts which can be mastered and achieved.
